Dear Members and Friends of the Harrisburg First Seventh-day Adventist Church,
This past Wednesday I attended a PA Conference Zoom pastors’ meeting. The host, Tim Bailey, shared an observation: “Yesterday’s 7.4 earthquake in Mexico was another “birth pang” (Romans 8:22). With all the signs of Matthew 24 playing out in our world this year, maybe you had the same thought.
So, why am I talking about koinonia in my sermons this summer? Koinonia (κοινωνίᾳ) is the Greek term translated as “fellowship” in the New Testament (Acts 2:42). It was used by the early Christians to describe the special bond that held them together. It wasn’t just a meaningless pat on the back. It was a genuine display of love, compassion, forgiveness and acceptance that characterized Jesus when he walked on this earth.
In this time of social distancing we really do need each other! Jesus spoke of the necessity of our love and unity for one another in His prayer for us: “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:20-21) Even our evangelism will be impacted by how we reflect genuine Christian fellowship to the world around us.
John also speaks of this koinonia as a reflection of our true walk in the truth: “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)
It is my prayer that our church family can provide an atmosphere conducive to sharing and encouraging koinonia, genuine Christian fellowship.
“Let’s encourage one another and all the more as we see the day approaching.”
If I or our church family can be of assistance to you during this time, please do not hesitate to call: 484-553-2686 (cell) or 717-652-6000 (church office)
