So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. …
Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.
Dear Members and Friends of the Harrisburg First Seventh-day Adventist Church,
Philip’s story is amazing. Does God still lead us by His Spirit in our day?
A few years ago, I had one of those days where all my plans were just not working out. A couple of my appointments at the church cancelled. Then, I decided to stay home and take care of some chores around our house. As I started to work on a project, I discovered that I needed some things from the store, so I headed to Walmart.
I was waiting in the checkout line when I heard a voice call me by name. It was one of my former students from my Senior Bible Class at Blue Mountain Academy, and he was pushing his son in a stroller. He had graduated eight years before, and from time to time we would see each other and talk about how things were going. This conversation immediately went in an unexpected direction: “Pastor Sanner, I told God if I saw you… I would ask you to baptize me.” He went on to explain that on Friday he had made a commitment to God, that if he saw me on Sabbath at the academy, he would ask me about baptism. But I wasn’t there on Sabbath, and it was now Sunday afternoon. He went on to explain that he wouldn’t let one day break the deal. This young man had made a commitment to God, and God made sure that divine appointment took place! I spent several weeks studying with him and was thrilled to baptize him (in a creek!) one special Friday evening in September that year.
Our story can be much like Philip’s if we will be open to the Spirit’s leading and just walk across the room into the unknown plan that God has for us as His ambassadors.
“Let’s encourage one another and all the more as we see the day approaching.”
