We can see ourselves in Jesus' prayer of John 17. He doesn't call us by name in verse 20, but it is clear that He had each of us in mind.
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,”
Isn’t that an awesome thought? Jesus had each of us in mind as he knelt in the garden and prayed.
First, Jesus prayed for our unity. In verses 21-23, notice the three phrases Jesus uses to make His point:
“that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me--so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (emphasis added)
Note that Jesus also emphasizes that this unity is our witness. People will believe in the reality of Jesus through our unity. This unity reflects God’s glory to those around us.
Second, Jesus prayed for our destiny. In verse 24, Jesus prays:
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.”
In His prayer, Jesus asks the Father to secure our destiny. That security is based on the love between the Father and the Son. Jesus desires for us to be with Him where He is. Don’t you long for that day?
Finally, Jesus prayed for our love for others in verses 25-26.
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
The Father loves the Son, the Son loves us, and we, in turn, are to love others.
What is your response to His prayer for you?
“Let’s encourage one another and all the more as we see the day approaching.”
