Dear Members and Friends of the Harrisburg First Seventh-day Adventist Church,
When our children were young, we wanted them to grow up knowing that Jesus loved them. Theda had an idea. She called her artist friend, Bill, and asked if he would be willing to do portraits of Gillian and Jonathan. He agreed, and to give him a visual of what we had in mind, we took individual photos of each child in my arms, giving their daddy anaffectionate hug. We also sent him our favorite picture of Jesus cradling a baby lamb in His arms. Bill took those photos and turned them into pastel portraits of our children in the loving arms of Jesus. We framed the portraits and hung them over each of their beds to remind them that Jesus loves them and that they also have a Heavenly Father who hugs them every day. Remember, Jesus said, “If you know me, you know the Father.” (John 8:19).
Jesus told the story of the prodigal son to remind us of the extravagant love that His Father has for each of us. The son left home, squandered his inheritance, and then came to his senses. Rehearsing the words that he would speak to his father, he headed home.
“When he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed him. The son started his speech: ‘Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever again.’ But the father wasn’t listening. He was calling to the servants, ‘Quick. Bring a clean set of clothes and dress him. Put the family ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Then get a grain-fed heifer and roast it. We’re going to feast! We’re going to have a wonderful time! My son is here -- given up for dead and now alive! Given up for lost and now found!’ And they began to have a wonderful time.”
Our Heavenly Father is a model of what we fathers are to be for our children. Our love for our children should turn their hearts to home and to their heavenly home, too. If your earthly father failed to model God’s love in your life, know that you also have a Heavenly Father that hugs you every day.
“Let’s encourage one another and all the more as we see the day approaching.”
